Recovery From Burnout: Create Your Burnout Recovery Balm
Share:

Recovering from burnout looks different for every doctor as they each have different needs and things that are important to them in their recovery.
If you were asked to create a Burnout Recovery Balm with all the things needed to ensure your recovery, what would it contain?
I recommend 3 essential ingredients for your Burnout Recovery Balm base to ensure your recovery:
- “Make your own recovery the first priority in your life” Robin Norwood. To do this you need to acknowledge that your health is important and put your health and yourself at the top of your priority list. This is an essential mindset shift needed for your recovery. Once you do this your recovery can start
- Support. Reach out for help and support to help you stop ignoring your problems and start to address them. Evidence shows that post-burnout recovery and growth are more likely to happen if you have good support.
- Take some time off so that you can dedicate your time and energy to focussing on you and your needs. This is essential in the later stages of burnout for your physical and mental recovery but may still be needed in the earlier stages of burnout. Time to reconnect to you, what matters to you and what you need right now to get better. Recovery takes time and patience.
What else do you need to ensure your recovery? What would be your optional ingredients for your Burnout Recovery Balm?
These are up to you and you get to choose. What’s important to you in your recovery? What matters to you? What brings you joy and what keeps you well? What changes do you want to make to nourish you? What things no longer serve you and how can you let these go? What would you like to do differently? How can you become better at taking care of you to avoid further burnout in the future? What do you need to ensure your secondary prevention of burnout?
Recovery is not a linear process; it’s a bit like snakes 🐍 and ladders🪜 but with the right support it can be much smoother. Did you know that Coaching is recommended by the Royal Society of Occupational Medicine as it is a brilliant support for recovery from burnout?
